With Friends Like Irina Spalko…

… who needs enemies? Regardless, you might want to pop on over to her very official looking MySpace profile and make nice with our favorite summer 2008 baddie. A friendly gesture at this early stage might spare you the tip of her rapier.

I was born in 1929 and raised in a superstitious Ukranian village, where my psychic abilities led me being branded a ‘witch’. I was handpicked by Stalin to oversee research into psychic warfare. A former member of the KGB’s Science and Technology Directorate, I have been decorated with the Order of Lenin. My powers of intuition have taken me a long way from the experiments i performed on animals as a teenager. As voracious a seeker of truth as any Indy has ever met, I show there is no limit to how far I am prepared to go to achieve my goals. My expertise with the saber, rapier, and foil drives the point home. My honest and incorruptible character, combined with my complete devotion to the cause, gained me swift recognition and the nickname “Iron Irina”. One of the several external operations that i did for the Motherland was the “Operation Crystal Skull”, where I had to travel to the jungles of Peru to find the crystal skull and to unlock its unspeakable powers for the glory of the great Soviet Union.

That is some great character development on behalf of our girl, and I have to assume the profile is an official marketing effort on behalf of the studio. It’s well done and worth a visit - if only for her Russian Red Army theme song!

Irina Spalko’s Soundtrack Theme

irina-spalkoYou can’t actually listen to it yet, as the official Crystal Skull soundtrack isn’t released until May 20th, but a review of John Williams highly anticipated score has been published online.

“Williams depicts musically the character of Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett), main baddie of this new episode.” - Full Interview

That’s not much to go on, but obviously Agent Spalko will have her very own theme and we’re betting that Williams went out of his way to make it as memorable as the character. By the way, did anyone see the leaked trailer before it was so quickly pulled down today? Was that Spalko jumping out of a tree at Indy against a nightime sky at the very end? I think we can add “extremely athletic” to adjectives like kinky, sultry and dangerous when we discuss her from now on! What do you think?

Sugary Spalko Sweetness

The only thing better than watching the evil and alluring Agent Spalko on screen might be to… drink her sweet nectar, or something. Now that everyone is sufficiently uncomfortable, have a look at Agent Spalko as the centerpiece for Dr. Pepper’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull marketing campaign. An evil Russian by any other name would taste as sweet…

Cate Blanchett’s Spalko - Kinky?

From EW.com - Another focus of chatroom buzz has been the baddies, a nasty group of Russian soldiers and operatives in search of the title object because of its reputed mind-controlling powers. (About time, says Ford, that Indy moved on from tangling with German SS officers, as he did in movies 1 and 3: ”We plum wore the Nazis out. Couldn’t go there again.”)

The leader of the KGB-backed pack is Cate Blanchett, in a severe, straight-banged, ink black wig, as Agent Irina Spalko. She’s a born interrogator. Gimlet-eyed and handy with a sword, she crosses blades with Mutt. Asked if Agent Spalko gives off a vaguely dominatrix vibe, Lucas says, ”Not so vaguely,” and bursts out laughing. Could be the kinkiest thing he’s helped brainstorm since he put Princess Leia in a gold bikini and chains in Return of the Jedi.

Russian Agent Irina Spalko

Cate Blanchett debuts this summer as Irina Spalko, a villainous Russian agent hot on the trail of Indiana Jones. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull producer, Frank Marshall, said Spalko continued the tradition of Indiana having a love-hate relationship “with every woman he ever comes in contact with”.

Blanchett had wanted to play a villain for a “couple of years”. She enjoyed being a part of the Indiana Jones legacy as she loved the previous films. Spalko’s bob cut was Blanchett’s idea, with the character’s stern looks and behaviour recalling Rosa Klebb in From Russia with Love.
